Improve an AI Prompt
Improving an AI prompt usually means making it clearer, more specific, and easier for the AI to evaluate against a desired result.
A simple formula
A strong prompt often includes:
Role — Who should the AI act as?
Task — What exactly should it do?
Context — What information does it need?
Requirements — What must or must not be included?
Output format — How should the answer be structured?
Examples — If useful, show what “good” looks like.
Weak prompt
Tell me about marketing.
Improved prompt
Act as a senior digital marketing strategist. Explain the fundamentals of digital marketing to a small-business owner who has little marketing experience.
Cover SEO, paid advertising, email marketing, and social media.
For each area, explain what it is, when it is useful, typical costs, and one practical example. Keep the explanation under 800 words and use clear headings and bullet points.
Even better when the goal is specific
Instead of:
Write a social media strategy.
Try:
Act as a social media strategist. Create a 90-day strategy for a local coffee shop trying to increase weekday customers.
The target audience is adults ages 25–45 within 10 miles of the shop. Assume a monthly marketing budget of $1,500.
Prioritize Instagram and TikTok.
Include weekly content themes, posting frequency, promotional ideas, KPIs, and a simple way to measure ROI.
Present the strategy as a week-by-week table.
A useful template
Role:
Act as a [relevant expert/role].
Task:
Your job is to [specific action].
Context:
Here is the information you should consider:
[background, audience, situation, data, or source material]
Requirements:
[Requirement 1]
[Requirement 2]
[Requirement 3]
Avoid [specific things to avoid]
Output:
Provide the result as [format].
Use [tone/style/length] and organize it with [headings/table/bullets/etc.].
Success criteria:
A strong answer should [describe what a successful result looks like].
If important information is missing, ask me up to [number] clarifying questions before completing the task.
Best rule of thumb: don’t just tell the AI what topic you’re interested in; tell it what outcome you want.
If you paste an AI prompt you’re currently using, I can show you exactly how I’d improve it and explain why each change helps.
