{"id":221,"date":"2025-05-27T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mickeylieberman.com\/strokes\/?p=221"},"modified":"2025-05-08T16:29:47","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T22:29:47","slug":"what-are-the-main-causes-of-strokes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mickeylieberman.com\/strokes\/what-are-the-main-causes-of-strokes\/","title":{"rendered":"How Does Physical Therapy Help a Stroke Patient?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Stroke Physical Therapy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Of the more than 700,000 people who suffer a stroke each year in the United States, approximately two-thirds will require some sort of rehabilitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Rehabilitation is used to help these individuals become as independent as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Many forms of therapy can assist them in their recovery and enable them to achieve the best quality of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There are two types of strokes, ischemic and hemorrhagic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">An <strong>ischemic stroke<\/strong> occurs when brain cells die due to inadequate blood flow, often caused by an artery blockage in the neck or brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The lack of oxygenated blood that goes to the brain will cause the brain to deteriorate in function, causing your systems to shut down when a cerebrovascular accident happens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A <strong>hemorrhagic stroke<\/strong> is a result of a burst blood vessel in the brain that causes bleeding into or around the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">How a stroke affects a patient depends on the different parts and amounts of the brain damaged by the stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The disabilities caused by stroke vary by individual as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In general, stroke can cause five types of disabilities: paralysis or problems controlling movement; sensory disturbances, including pain; problems using or understanding language; problems with thinking and memory; and emotional disturbances. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Motor and sensory impairments can be treated by an experienced physical therapist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Access to physical therapists is no longer limited to physical therapy centers, and patients have a greater variety of options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Many fitness centers in NC offer the services of experienced physical therapists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Stroke physical therapy often includes exercises to regain the use of stroke-impaired limbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Several of these exercises can be done at places that also encourage weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Some of the skills that you can restore when you undergo stroke physical therapy are walking, grasping, bending, and increased range of motion in stroke-impaired limbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Physical therapy can also take the form of repetitive motion of affected limbs to encourage brain plasticity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This enables functions that were damaged by the stroke to be taken over by different parts of the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">You can recover from a stroke, but this will depend on the many factors that directly affect your condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">How you recover is partially in your control.
