The prodrome, which occurs hours or days before the headache.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">2. The aura, which immediately precedes the headache.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">3. The pain phase, also known as the headache phase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">4. The postdrome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There is a lot of variability in the actual experience of any given migraine sufferer thus not all phases may be experienced during a migraine attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Prodrome Phase: This phase typically occurs for 40-60% of migraineurs and can precede the headache phase by hours to days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Its symptoms may include the following.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; excessive sleepiness<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; cravings for certain foods (e.g.; chocolate or other sugary foods)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; depression<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; euphoria<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; fatigue<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; irritability<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; stiff muscles (especially in the neck area)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; yawning<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; constipation<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; diarrhea<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; increased urination<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; other visceral symptoms<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Aura Phase:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This phase is experienced by 20-30% of migraine sufferers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Migraine auras are neurological phenomena that are usually followed directly by the headache pain phase within the hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">They range from visual disturbances to somatosensory sensations such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; flashing lights<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; zigzag lines<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; blurred, shimmering, or clouded vision<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; feelings of pins and needles that may be felt in the hands and arms all the way to the nose and mouth<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Other symptoms such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">vertigo<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">hyper-sensitivity to touch,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">auditory or olfactory hallucinations may also occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Pain Phase: The pain phase is basically a severe headache that may last between 4-72 hours if untreated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The head pain felt is usually a pounding throbbing pain localized to one side of the head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It is also typically accompanied by nausea, hypersensitivity to light, sound, and even smells this results in the migraine sufferer seeking refuge in a dark room to wait for this phase-out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Other symptoms that sometimes occur are pallor (paleness in the skin), sweating, muscle stiffness, lightheadedness, impaired concentration, vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive urination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Postdrome Phase: As the name implies this phase occurs at the end of the migraine attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The migraine sufferer may feel tired, still have head pain, feel &#8220;hungover&#8221;, have gastrointestinal symptoms, mood changes, and weakness. On the flip side, some people feel unusually energized or euphoric after an attack, whereas others note depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Often, some minor headache phase symptoms may continue, such as loss of appetite, photophobia, and lightheadedness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For some patients, slight headaches may still occur when standing or sitting quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Usually, these postdrome symptoms go away after a good 5 or 6-hour sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Migraine Headache Migraines are a real condition that affects at least 8% of people, 3x as many women to men.
