Beware Of Migraine Food Triggers

Migraine Food Triggers

There are certain foods that can cause a series of irritations or reactions to trigger a migraine headache.

The degree of severity of migraine headaches varies among individuals. If you do suspect a food trigger as a cause for your migraine, perhaps you should consider trying an elimination diet to pinpoint the trigger food(s).

There are common migraine food triggers that merit discussion.

 Cheese

Cheese is a major trigger for migraines, particularly hard or aged cheeses.  Soft cheeses like cream cheese and new cheeses are unlikely to cause problems.

Processed Meats

Nitrates are another major migraine trigger.  For most people, the most common source of nitrates is in processed meat, items like hot dogs, sausage, bacon, processed lunchmeats, etc.

Condiments

Salad dressings – for reasons unknown are probably tied to a combination of other triggers all coming together in one place.

Spices and Additives

Spice triggers are partially linked to scent sensitivity since many spices have a pungent odor.

Any spice can be a trigger.  Spices as triggers may be tied, at least partially, to scent sensitivity.

Seasonings that may cause migraines include monosodium glutamate (MSG), commonly found in Asian foods, artificial sweeteners, food dyes, and vinegar.

Stress is becoming the main cause of migraine headaches these days.

And every day, we are faced with information overload, stress factors, traffic, allergies, and environmental problems that can trigger migraines, which are beyond our control, but there is more that we can do to deal with migraines.
