This spawn time is where fish start to mate, so they start an eating frenzy just before that happens, and sometimes while it does.<\/span><\/p>\n

Factors That Make Fish Spawn<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Before starting to tell you how and when different fish spawn and eat, it\u2019s important to explain what different factors matter when looking for spawn times.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fish Spawn<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Water Temperature<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Different species spawn in different temperatures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some species like it hot (over 85\u00baF), others like it a little colder (60\u00baF) and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n

This has a lot to do with the season as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fish that like hot temperatures will probably prefer the hottest seasons, such as summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The same happens with fish that prefer cooler temps. But some of them can spawn at the same time as others, even in the same waterway.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Size & Depth of Waterway<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Following the same trend of ideas as with temperature, the breadth and the depth of the water can change what fish and how many you can find accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes it is possible to find several fish species in the same lake but spawning not only at different times but in different depths.<\/span><\/p>\n

And this happens the most with large bodies of water.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Day & Night Cycles<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

While it is common knowledge among the most experienced fishermen, it is possible for someone who\u2019s just starting not to know that some species prefer spawning in the morning, while others do it in the sunrise.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the light from the sun changes the temperature of the body of water, fish take that as a sign to decide whether to spawn or not.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Current & Rain<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

When it rains, or where there\u2019s a storm, or something of the like \u2013 bodies of water change in size, depth, and eventually get more or less current.<\/span><\/p>\n

When this happens, the more common effect is for fish to delay their spawn times, while a few others rush their spawn time.<\/span><\/p>\n

This will help you catch the right one accordingly, and the different alternatives you\u2019ll have whenever an outside factor delays it.<\/span><\/p>\n

From extreme weather to environmental damage, these factors can have a significant impact on fish spawn times every year.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Do Fish Spawn & When do They Eat?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u200b1. Walleye<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This fish is probably the only one that spawns in March or April, sometimes in between.<\/span><\/p>\n

For this fish to start breeding, the water should be about 43 to 48\u00baF, as it makes them more comfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the place they like the most is in rocky parts in lakes and stretches in oceans.<\/span><\/p>\n

The less profound this part, the better for the walleye.<\/span><\/p>\n

As this fish doesn\u2019t care for their eggs as much as other species.<\/span><\/p>\n

They just mate and leave the eggs in a rocky place, and that\u2019s it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The females may eventually stick around and protect them from other fish, but that\u2019s unlikely.<\/span><\/p>\n

Walleye prefer difficult places to spawn because that\u2019s where fewer other species are.<\/span><\/p>\n

When They Eat<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bThe walleye also prefers to eat a lot while and after mating.<\/span><\/p>\n

This means you can put anything you want as bait and they will attack it.<\/span><\/p>\n

It could be a bobber with live bait, a fly, a small plastic, or even a simple hook with no bait, and they may also catch that.<\/span><\/p>\n

And what makes them even better to pick is that they go on aggressively to catch the bait, which makes them fun to fish.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Northern Pike<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

These are one of the species that prefer the coldest temperatures out there.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, their spawning temperatures can range from 35 to 50\u00baF most of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

And when it comes to places, they prefer marshes and cattails, rushes, where there are many plants and weeds to hide and feed on.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you spot a place like this with temperatures like that, you are very likely to find northern spikes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes they spawn when there\u2019s ice still in the water.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the time pikes do this where the water is very deep, so females and males can come together and start the mating time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here, the males will slap the females with their tails, leaving milt so the females can fertilize the eggs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the females drop the eggs in the bottom and let the babies grow by themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

When They Eat<\/span><\/p>\n

Similar to walleyes, northern pikes don\u2019t have many other fish to protect their eggs from, so parents may leave children unattended.<\/span><\/p>\n

And of course, this happens because, after the mating process, they end up exhausted and looking for food like crazy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s where you can fish them more easily after they\u2019ve just spawned.<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem of northern fishing pikes is that they love icy and deep water.<\/span><\/p>\n

So not only it will be difficult to find the ideal bait, but it will also be a problem to find the right area to fish.<\/span><\/p>\n

But as long as you know you\u2019re on the right temperature & marshy area, there\u2019s a high chance you can catch one of these with a spinner or minnow bait.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, tip-ups or large shiners may work.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Largemouth Bass<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The preferred species of many fishermen, especially those who like summer, largemouth bass love April and May and spawn in temperatures from 60 to 70\u00baF.<\/span><\/p>\n

This fish also prefers really deep waters, so you will most likely find them in lakes, especially those with hard depths such as gravel, rocks, and sometimes even sand.<\/span><\/p>\n

If it has many weeds and marshes, they probably won\u2019t be there.<\/span><\/p>\n

With this species, you will experience different spawning and eating behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n

They don\u2019t leave their children unattended such as walleyes and northern pikes, they instead made big nests in the bed floor by piling up rocks or by laydown.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the females go into the dens, the most covered the better for them, and will start mating.<\/span><\/p>\n

When They Eat<\/span><\/p>\n

After mating, they will look for food, so here\u2019s where you enter.<\/span><\/p>\n

To fish largemouth bass you\u2019ll need something that goes deep into the bottom of the lake.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, a worm or crawfish work well too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember they protect their nests better than other species, so it is crucial to find a bait that moves, this will attract their attention the most.<\/span><\/p>\n

We recommend drop-shooting to maximize the opportunities of catching one.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b4. Smallmouth Bass<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

They are very similar to largemouth, but they prefer a slightly cooler environment and are way more invested in their nests, so it will probably be hard to catch them.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find them in between April and May in temperatures that range from 55 to 65\u00baF.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just find a place where smallmouth bass are supposed to be with temperatures like this and within these months, and you\u2019ll see them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The spawning behavior is based on the males creating nests deep in shallow waters, using rocks, weeds, and leaves for it.<\/span>
\nThey love to cover up their nests, even more than largemouth.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in contrast with the latter, the females of smallmouth will stay in the nests for a long time until the eggs hatch.<\/span><\/p>\n

So catching females can be harder than males, which reduces fishing possibilities a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

When They Eat<\/span><\/p>\n

Males will immediately go and find food after mating, so here\u2019s where you need to prepare moving bait that goes deep in deep water.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember that they are more aggressive and protective of their eggs and rarely leave the nest while doing it, so if you can shoot moving bait close to one of these nests, you will probably catch something.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b5. Bluegill<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

When it comes to fishing in spawn times, the Bluegill is probably among the most challenging species out there.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can generally find them in the hottest months, such as June, July and Augusts at temperatures that range from 65 to 80\u00baF and sometimes a little more.<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem with bluegill is that they go and make nests even deeper than bass does.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, they are a little more aggressive and active during this time, especially the males.<\/span><\/p>\n

Females will mostly stay inside or around the nest without going far, but the males may go on an eating frenzy and come back to the nest and protect it.<\/span><\/p>\n

When They Eat<\/span><\/p>\n

Luckily, Bluegills separate from the nest once the eggs are large enough or hatched.<\/span><\/p>\n

This means you can find them eating like crazy, going hard towards any bait without problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can use a bobber, flies, or even small plastics.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you want to catch them while spawning, using moving bait that goes deep can be your best choice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Similarly to walleyes, though, they eat aggressively, so they are fun to catch.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Perch<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This species doesn\u2019t like deep water as much as others, yet it may go at it in the coldest months or the coldest places when spawning.<\/span><\/p>\n

But they love vegetation, especially small bushes, and marshes where the water is not too deep.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find them spawning in months such as April, May, and sometimes even June.<\/span><\/p>\n

The temperatures can go from 40 to 60\u00baF. You\u2019ll know it is perch because they lay eggs deep, and then come back to the surface to eat.<\/span><\/p>\n

The females will create the nests and lay eggs, and then the males come and spread milt so they can grow.<\/span><\/p>\n

When They Eat<\/span><\/p>\n

As soon as the spawning finishes, perches leave the nests and go eat.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mating process doesn\u2019t leave the fish going crazy for food, but they will still be aggressive towards almost any bait, especially small ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

From plastics to jigs, crank-baits, bobbers, and even live bait can be pretty effective with perch.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b7. Crappie<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This fish makes small bowl-like nests in shallow water, going from 2 to 8 feet deep.<\/span><\/p>\n

The temperature of spawning for Crappie is around 55 to 60\u00baF, especially when water is very active.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll mostly find them in May or June months, but they don\u2019t appear in hot places but instead where there are logs and weeds debris and brush.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is where males will decide to make their small nests.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the females find the males and the nests, they will drop the eggs. Males will then go and fertilize.<\/span><\/p>\n

They will stay around the nest to protect while the females go to eat.<\/span><\/p>\n

This process can take one or two days. And you\u2019ll find the fish very active, which makes them very easy to fish.<\/span><\/p>\n

When They Eat<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite their preference for bushy places, crappies are easier to fish than many other species.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their aggressiveness, especially from the males, makes the bait choice pretty easy \u2013 anything from spinners to plastics and crankbaits will work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tube jigs, small minnows, and live bait can also work terrifically.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the best of all \u2013 they like to stay in large groups which mean you can find & catch them quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n

8.\u00a0 When do Muskie Spawn?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Muskie are a spring spawning species. In the south, say Texas, Georgia, and even Tennessee, you\u2019ll start to see spawning behavior as early as March.<\/span><\/p>\n

Middle latitudes, regarding muskie distribution, will see April as the key month.<\/span><\/p>\n

The northern reaches of the range (Canada) generally won\u2019t see muskie spawning until May and sometimes even early June.<\/span><\/p>\n

This makes sense when you think about the northern climate being generally cooler and warming slower going from winter to spring and summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only that, but\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

A mild winter brings on an early onset of spring-like weather, meaning the spawn could start earlier than usual in said area.<\/span><\/p>\n

A harsh winter can push the spawn to be later.<\/span><\/p>\n

The key metric tends to be water temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n

Muskie spawning temperature is between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/span><\/p>\n

As spring approaches, bringing warmer weather, the lakes and rivers will also begin to slowly warm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mid 52-55 is the perfect muskie spawning temperature range.<\/span><\/p>\n

When They Eat<\/span><\/p>\n

When muskies spawn, they do not eat anything.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, they don\u2019t all spawn at the same time, so you should still go musky fishing during the spawning season.<\/span><\/p>\n
